Hello,
Lifelong interest in Afghans, but only have had one so far. I am looking for more of a working/desert type than the show type. My concern, however, is that I have a Chihuahua. Do you feel any of your dogs would be compatible with a Chihuahua in the house? My show-type Afghan, a European import, is great with the Chihuahua, but I don’t think he has near the level of prey drive my GSDs do,let alone a working-bred sight hound. However, many sight hounds I have known were ok with animals IN their household. I have heard conflicting information and would be very curious to hear your thoughts. I would be very interested in purchasing a female in the future if the Chihuahua would not be an issue. He is only 3 years old, so he’ll be around a while…unless eaten 😉
. There is a misconception that hounds that hunt cannot be trusted. I believe they are just like other hounda that lIve in households. I personally think that dogs that hunt aree generally more stable and tend to be good citizens.
Many years ago a hunting buddy of ours met us out in the desert to go coursing. I brought along Afghans and Greyhounds, he brought his Greyhounds, a Deerhound, and suprise … a TINY Miniature Pincher. At first sight of this strange little beast darting in and out of the sagebrush my pack considered Min Pin for dinner but after a proper introduction they became hunting partners. That little guy was a decent brush buster for rabbits but his specialty was lizards.
Ernie’s been threatening to to get Pugs for years and that’s getting ptetty close to Chihuahua size. Of course they will have to be Racing Pugs! Yup, seriously they really do race.
These racing-hunting type Afghans do have VERY intense prey drive but also learn to focus on what they are allowed to hunt. When hunting jackrabbits they will the ignore range cattle which are frequently around … but … they do find Pronghorns much too enticing.
They actually live in a household with cats, but these are their cats. Similarly, if they were raised together as family they should be fine as long as some precautions were observed such as caution with the big fast guys roughhousing and overwhelming the little one.
